A Taste of Portugal

28 Jul

I love malasadas! If you don’t know what malasadas are, then you must not be Portuguese … or have visited Hawaii. Unfortunately, I’ve never visited Hawaii, but I do happen to be Portuguese. If you’re Portuguese, chances are you’ve had one of these … if you haven’t, shame on you. They’re way too tasty to pass up! Malasadas, better known as Portuguese donuts, are one of my favorite treats. They may not look like your typical donut, due to the lack of hole, but they taste similar to a sugar donut. If you haven’t tried one of these crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside treats, you need to. Being 100% Portuguese, these puffy pastries will not go unseen on the dessert table.

Just like many other dessert, everyone makes malasadas differently. I’ve used a recipe that has been passed down throughout my family, but some how mine don’t come out as tasty as my grandma’s. Hopefully, mine will be as tasty as hers one day!

Ingredients
1/2 c. warm water
2 pkg. active dry yeast
1/2 c. lukewarm milk
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. salt
4 to 5 c. flour
vegetable oil

Directions
Pour warm water into mixing bowl and add dry yeast, stirring to dissolve. Stir in milk, sugar, butter, eggs, salt and 3 1/2 cups flour; mix with wooden spoon until smooth. Gradually add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough that can be easily handled.
Mix by hand and turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface.

Knead until smooth and elastic (8-10 minutes). Place in a cleaned and greased bowl and allow to rise until dough doubles in size.

Heat oil to 375°F. Break a piece of dough into size desired. Stretch out and drop into hot oil. Fry until golden then roll in granulated sugar.

They taste the best when they’re served warm, so eat up!
